What Your Dentist Doesn’t Tell You About All-On-4

Many Choices for Your Ideal Tooth Replacement

Simply put, in order to determine whether any individual is a good candidate for dental implants, a patient must be examined by an experienced dentist like Dr. Burak Taskonak. The best candidates for successful dental implant surgery and long-term wear have adequate bone at the implant site to support the integration of the implants, so if patients put off getting dental implants for an extended time after their initial tooth loss, or if they have inadequate bone due to some other reason or problem, that can be a barrier to receiving dental implants. However, even in those cases, the advancement of dental implant technology and other supplemental procedures like bone grafts have made it possible for most patients to receive their desired implant treatment!

Factors That Can Determine Your Dental Implant Candidacy

Most patients we see have had some degree of periodontal disease in their lifetimes; in fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of modern tooth loss. For patients suffering severe cases of periodontal disease, we will first target and treat the underlying bacteria that’s likely causing their tooth loss. In cases of advanced periodontal disease, the implantation process is still possible, but the treatment process will likely be extended by a couple of weeks to a couple of months.

Though it can be a factor in the degree of bone loss a particular patient may have, the age of a patient alone does not determine his or her candidacy for dental implants. Overall health is a much more critical factor than age, although both can result in less than ideal outcomes. Studies have shown advanced age increases the risk of implant failure, likely because older patients are more prone to systemic health conditions, poor jaw bone health, and potentially longer healing times.
However, with the advancements in modern implant dentistry, this can still be the ideal option for patients of any age, providing them with a lifelong solution to missing or failing teeth!

Common complications of bruxism include fracturing of the implant and/or ceramic restoration, and loose or fractured screws. If you severely grind or clench your teeth, Dr. Taskonak may recommend a custom-made mouthguard.
Underlying medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, hyperglycemia, hyperthyroidism, and immune system disorders) – especially if improperly controlled – may make it more difficult for your body to heal after surgery, and may also increase the risk of postsurgical infection. Bone density factors such as osteoporosis can impact the success of dental implants, especially in patients that have been on long-term bisphosphonate therapy. Certain medications can also impair implants’ fusion with your jawbone, such as steroids or drugs that suppress the immune system. Although these conditions don’t prohibit getting dental implants, Dr. Taskonak may adjust your treatment plan to improve the likelihood of a successful outcome.
Multiple studies show dental implants have a lower success rate in smokers. Smoking affects your oral and general health, including low infection resistance and delayed wound healing. Smoking also negatively impacts fusion of dental implants in the jawbone by lowering blood flow, while the harmful residues from tobacco delay wound healing and hamper new cell growth.

Implants as an Option for Denture Wearers

Patients who have worn dentures for many years may have to address some bone density issues prior to a dental implant procedure; in most cases, however, this is not a disqualifier for receiving dental implants. For patients who wear permanent and/or partial dentures, dental implants are not only the right solution for you, they will be life-changing! With dental implants, denture wearers will no longer need to worry about what they can or cannot eat, plus their confidence will be restored beyond their wildest goals!
